Geographical distribution
In France, Denys and colleagues’ 2020 revision documents Phoxinus phoxinus in the Seine and middle and lower Rhine drainages. Loire, Garonne and Rhône minnows are assigned to other species: the complex’s former Eurasian range is not reproduced.

Documented areas, not an exhaustive list. Presence in a region does not imply presence in every water body or permission to fish.

Identification
Minnows have a streamlined body and dark lateral blotches, with small, inconspicuous scales. Their colours can change during spawning. The OFB uses Phoxinus spp. for grouped monitoring: not every minnow observed in France can be confirmed as Phoxinus phoxinus from these features alone.
Habitat
Cool, oxygenated waters with shallow margins and shelters support minnow shoals; some lakes also hold them. Look for a small calm area beside the current. Stay back: there is no need to cross the shoal or turn over stones.
Diet
An opportunistic omnivore: small invertebrates, algae and plant debris, sometimes other fishes' eggs or fry, according to the Seine-Normandie Observatory for Phoxinus phoxinus.
Behaviour
Minnows exploit varied food, including small invertebrates. Watch at what height they intercept particles. For a first attempt, present a bait at the edge of the group rather than in its centre; this helps you see a bite without repeated disturbance.
Fishing context and precautions
- Assemble a light float, adjustable shot and a small single hook.
- Measure the depth near the shoal, then set the bait so it does not drag.
- Gently place a very small morsel and watch for a clear movement of the float.
- Strike briefly, without pulling the catch out of the water; adjust the setting if the fish swallows deeply.
A distinctive feature
In Phoxinus phoxinus, breeding males develop bright colours and may bear small white tubercles on the head; these signs alone do not identify every minnow species.
