Identification

Adults lack canine teeth; scaled cheeks.

Nébih and the KHESZ federation note that juveniles may have prominent canine teeth, which adults lack. Also compare the distinct bands and shorter mouth with common zander; teeth alone are not sufficient at every age.

Habitat

Large turbid rivers, lakes and estuaries.

Diet

Small fish and invertebrates.

Behaviour

Mainly active at dawn and dusk.

Fishing context and precautions

This sheet prepares for identifying a rod-and-line encounter without attributing common-zander rigs to Sander volgensis. On AVN stretches of the Mittellandkanal, the manager requires removal of Volga zander: do not prescribe routine release. Check the permit and stretch rules before any fishing.

Wozniak reports catches in the Tisza in 2010 using a very light ledger rod. A historical Hungarian account without hook dimensions or a complete rig; it does not become a current German recipe.

A distinctive feature

The male excavates a spawning depression.
