Distribution sources

Identification

Slender body, canine teeth and two adjacent dorsal fins.

Habitat

Lakes, reservoirs and deeper, slow-flowing areas.

Diet

It eats mainly small fish; crayfish are also among its prey.

Behaviour

Fish make up an important part of its diet; it also eats crustaceans. Its vision is adapted to low light.

The male guards the nest. A fish repeatedly defending a small area in spring may be protecting its eggs: leave that spot rather than interpreting its reaction as an easy opportunity to catch it.

Indicative biological size

50–100 cm in the Vendée guide; a descriptive range.

Fishing context and precautions

  1. Choose an accessible area outside any fishing reserve and a soft lure rigged straight on a jig head. Check that the total weight suits the rod.
  2. Cast beyond the transition you are targeting and follow the descent while keeping the line under control. Detect the first contact without allowing a large loop of slack line.
  3. Lift the lure with a moderate pull or a short retrieve, then let it sink again while following its movement. Also try a steady retrieve just above the bottom.
  4. At a clear bite or an unusual stop, regain contact and set the hook in a controlled way. If the rig snags on every pass, change the angle or weight rather than persisting.

A distinctive feature

The male guards and oxygenates the eggs in a nest.
