Rudd: identification, habitat and fishing guide

Scardinius erythrophthalmus

A shoaling fish often near weed beds.

Catalogue names : Rudd. Forms and names may vary between habitats.

Editorial review : · This species guide is not permission to fish. Read the precautions below and check the current rules for your location before targeting a species. Some species or populations are protected.

Geographical distribution

Native to many European drainages north of the Pyrenees and Alps, east towards the Ural and Black Sea. Introduced elsewhere. FishBase rejects older Siberian records caused by confusion with roach; they are excluded from the retained range.

Identification

Scardinius erythrophthalmus often has red fins. To distinguish it from roach, look particularly at its upward-slanting mouth and its dorsal fin beginning behind the pelvic fins. Colours alone can mislead, especially in young fish. Hybrids exist: retain some uncertainty when features conflict.

Habitat

Temperate water sheltered from current.

Diet

Omnivorous: insects, crustaceans, molluscs and plants; adults tend to eat more plant material.

Behaviour

Its diet combines invertebrates and plants. Observe whether the shoal is moving below the surface or staying among stems, then offer a bait at that level. Fish moving around does not necessarily mean they are feeding; wait until you can distinguish food being taken before multiplying your attempts.

Indicative biological size

Generally 20–30 cm according to DORIS; a descriptive range, not a legal size limit.

Fishing context and precautions

  1. Assemble a float, adjustable shotting and a single hook. Plumb the gap to avoid submerged stems.
  2. Present the bait above the plants, then let it sink freely.
  3. If bites occur on the drop, progressively reduce the depth setting.
  4. Strike without a large movement; bring the fish towards open water before using the landing net.

A distinctive feature

Its eggs are sticky and can adhere to vegetation or stones.
