Distribution sources

Identification

Downturned mouth, without barbels; the lower lip has an almost straight horny blade. The Castile and León account describes frequent small black spots without treating them as a sufficient diagnosis; confirm using a key to the genus.

Habitat

Flowing middle reaches of rivers.

Diet

Plant material, small invertebrates and detritus.

Behaviour

Schooling, particularly during spawning migration.

Fishing context and precautions

In Portugal’s rio Âncora ZPL, the ICNF 2026 notice prohibits fishing for Pseudochondrostoma duriense to restore its populations and requires its return. This prevention scope adopts neither the old Eria nymph-fishing account nor a method for another boga.

A distinctive feature

Hybrids with Achondrostoma are described; some closely resemble this species.
