Atlantic chub mackerel: identification, habitat and fishing guide

Scomber colias

The name “mackerel” may cover several species. Before transferring a technique or rule, check the belly markings and the whole profile. This guide distinguishes Scomber colias from Atlantic mackerel and proposes a sabiki adaptation from the Italian CNR manual, which documents the two species together. This context does not establish French permission.

Catalogue names : Maquereau blanc. Forms and names may vary between habitats.

Editorial review : · This species guide is not permission to fish. Read the precautions below and check the current rules for your location before targeting a species. Some species or populations are protected.

Geographical distribution

FishBase places Scomber colias in warm waters on eastern and western Atlantic coasts, including the Mediterranean and southern Black Sea. This is not the range of Scomber japonicus in the Indo-Pacific.

  • Documented presence : Atlantic Ocean
  • Documented presence : Mediterranean Sea
  • Documented presence : Black Sea

Documented areas, not an exhaustive list. Presence in a region does not imply presence in every water body or permission to fish.

Distribution sources

Identification

The pale belly bears dark markings, unlike the uniform belly of Atlantic mackerel. Do not rely only on dorsal stripes shared by the two species. A commercial name or origin cannot replace examination of the fish.

Habitat

The sources describe a pelagic species of the Atlantic continental shelf, also present in the Mediterranean. American observations do not automatically identify French fishing spots.

Diet

Plankton and small fish, according to the CNR account covering both mackerel species.

Behaviour

It lives in mobile shoals; presence and depth require local observation. The CNR manual describes Scomber colias and Scomber scombrus together as deeper by day and shallower at night, following their food. This collective scope does not assign a fixed depth to each shoal; keep a profile photograph before specifying the species in the log.

Fishing context and precautions

Petetta and Bolognini’s CNR manual names Scomber colias and Scomber scombrus in the same account and mentions sabiki near the coast. It describes a terminal weight preceded by short snoods with dressed hooks. For a boat adaptation in an authorised area, prepare unhooking and select a weight compatible with the rod; check local rules for the rig.

The controlled descent and measured movements proposed here are a presentation adaptation, without a cadence, depth or dimension validated specifically for Scomber colias. Check the identification of catches. CNR warns that these fish tolerate handling poorly and recommends moving area if catches are too small. Do not multiply contacts or catches to confirm colour markings; survival after release is not guaranteed.

A distinctive feature

Unlike Atlantic mackerel, it has a swim bladder.
