Ide: identification, habitat and fishing guide

Leuciscus idus

Start searching for ide by observing slow water and feeding activity. A float rig offers a simple starting point; an insect imitation or a small lure becomes an option only when the fish’s behaviour supports it. These suggestions do not promise a catch on every river.

Editorial review : · This species guide is not permission to fish. Read the precautions below and check the current rules for your location before targeting a species. Some species or populations are protected.

Geographical distribution

Native to European and Asian drainages from the Seine and lower Loire towards the Baltic, Black Sea, Caspian and Lena. Introduced notably in Great Britain and northern Italy; ornamental forms have also been transported elsewhere.

Identification

Leuciscus idus has a terminal mouth, a rounded back and an anal fin with a concave edge. Chub have a more convex anal fin and larger scales that form a net-like pattern. Red fins alone are not enough. Golden orfe is a cultivated colour form, not a new species in the catalogue.

Habitat

Ide inhabit slow sections of rivers and lakes. To explore, observe an overhang, a shaded margin or a transition between weak current and still water. Start with the nearest spot without entering the water; the mere presence of a branch does not prove an ide is holding there.

Diet

Adults eat insects, molluscs and crustaceans; larger fish also take small fish. Young fish mainly eat plant material.

Behaviour

Adults take invertebrates, among other food, and large individuals may eat fish. Watch whether food is taken under overhanging cover or deeper down. For a first attempt, present a small bait along the observed path: adjusting its depth is more instructive than always casting a predator lure.

Indicative biological size

Generally 30–50 cm according to DORIS; this biological range is not a legal size limit.

Fishing context and precautions

  1. Plumb the depth at a clear spot and rig a balanced float, graduated shotting and a single hook.
  2. Place a small bait at the edge of the observed area without dropping the shot onto the shoal.
  3. Let the bait remain presented or drift gently; watch the float while maintaining enough contact to strike.
  4. If there is no response, change the depth or location before multiplying baits and groundbait.

A distinctive feature

Golden orfe is a cultivated variety of ide with a bright orange colour.
