Identification
Gymnocephalus cernua has dark spots, adjoining dorsal fins and spiny rays. Perch have vertical bars instead; compare the fins too.
Habitat
Calm or slow waters in lakes, canals and large rivers; observe a bottom area where tackle can be retrieved from the bank.
Diet
Zooplankton and small invertebrates, including chironomid larvae, worms and crustaceans.
Behaviour
A bottom-dwelling fish able to seek food in low light. This activity does not constitute permission for night fishing.
Fishing context and precautions
- From a stable, permitted bank, prepare a float, adjustable shotting and a single hook.
- Plumb an accessible bottom area and attach a small piece of permitted worm, leaving the point exposed.
- Present near the bottom and watch the float without dragging the rig into obstacles.
- On a clear indication, make gentle contact; prepare unhooking without grasping the spines. This adaptation of float fishing does not guarantee a ruffe.
A distinctive feature
Its sensory organs allow it to detect prey even in darkness.
