Distribution sources
Identification
An elongated body, upturned mouth and short, dark first dorsal fin. Oblique streaks alone are insufficient.
Habitat
Coastal sand or mud in the northeastern Atlantic and Mediterranean. Observe from stable, permitted access.
Diet
Small fish and crustaceans.
Behaviour
It buries itself in soft bottoms to hunt by ambush. Do not try to dislodge it by hand.
Indicative biological size
Most often 30–35 cm in the DORIS guide; a descriptive indication.
Fishing context and precautions
- Prepare long pliers and a controlled landing area.
- Fit the jig with a single hook instead of a treble.
- Present it near a sandy bottom, then work it with short lifts and drops; this action is an indicative adaptation.
- On a catch, keep your hands away from the spines and use the prepared tool for unhooking. No presentation guarantees a catch.
A distinctive feature
The danger from the spines persists after the fish dies.
