European smelt: identification, habitat and fishing guide

Osmerus eperlanus

European smelt is Osmerus eperlanus, a small silver fish of coastal waters, estuaries and some lakes. Its name must not group together capelin and small cod-family fish; a local French fishing protocol remains to be documented. The practical scope here is an attributed Danish example, subject to access and local protections; it does not provide a French fishing calendar.

Catalogue names : Éperlan. Forms and names may vary between habitats.

Editorial review : · This species guide is not permission to fish. Read the precautions below and check the current rules for your location before targeting a species. Some species or populations are protected.

Geographical distribution

Its European North Atlantic range extends from the White Sea to western French coasts, including the Baltic and North Sea. The Gironde is the published southern limit, not confirmation of a population in 2026. Lake populations occur in several northern drainages; distinguish them from Osmerus mordax.

  • Native range : White Sea, Baltic and North Sea
  • Documented presence : Western French coast south to the Gironde, published limit

Documented areas, not an exhaustive list. Presence in a region does not imply presence in every water body or permission to fish.

Distribution sources

Identification

A slender body, silver stripe, large toothed mouth and adipose fin guide identification of Osmerus eperlanus. Mallotus villosus and Trisopterus species are different fish; a market name is insufficient.

Habitat

North-eastern Atlantic coastal waters and estuaries, with lake populations in northern Europe. Historical presence does not prove current abundance in an estuary.

Diet

Shrimps and small crustaceans; larger individuals also take small fish.

Behaviour

Migratory forms enter rivers to reproduce; other populations live in lakes. A spawning aggregation is not an invitation to multiply catches.

The historical Seine-Aval synthesis describes adhesive eggs attached to the substrate and downstream movement of the larvae. This archive does not establish the current state of a French population.

Inland Fisheries Ireland highlights risks from migration barriers, dredging, deteriorating water quality and unsustainable exploitation as dead bait. This Irish assessment is neither a French legal status nor an invitation to collect baitfish.

Indicative biological size

Around 16.5 cm common total length according to FishBase; not a legal size limit.

A 2019 Swedish study also describes fish usually 8–14 cm long in its regional context; this does not replace FishBase’s common length and illustrates population variation.

Fishing context and precautions

Danish example: at Rømø, Søren Johansen reports smelt in October 2026 on a herring rig baited with shrimp pieces and then herring. The account does not detail a complete protocol. Check the licence, access and local protections; no French venue, French authorisation or general effectiveness is inferred.

A distinctive feature

A cucumber-like smell is described for this species; it does not replace morphological identification.
