Fishing context and precautions

The TIRM 2025/2026 framework prohibits fishing for escalo, named Squalius carolitertii in its official table. This international Miño example covers identification and prevention, without targeting. Rules for an ordinary Portuguese fishing ground do not replace this cross-border regime.

Edital 1103/2026, published in September, enters into force on 1 November 2026. For an encounter from that date, check the new text; this reading does not presume the contents of its taxon-specific table.

A distinctive feature

Studies show its vulnerability to heat stress compared with other, more Mediterranean Iberian Squalius.
