Geographical distribution
Native to major East Asian drainages from the Amur to the Xi Jiang. Introduced in many countries for aquaculture, including France from the 1950s. Distribution through farming does not imply self-sustaining establishment in every drainage.
- Native range : East Asian drainages from the Amur to the Xi Jiang
- Introduction : France
Documented areas, not an exhaustive list. Presence in a region does not imply presence in every water body or permission to fish.

Identification
Small scales, broad head without barbels and low-set eyes.
The Minnesota DNR account adds an upturned toothless mouth and a keel extending both in front of and behind the pelvic fins. This documentary diagnosis does not require additional handling of a jumping fish.
Habitat
Slow rivers, lakes and ponds.
The U.S.FWS account describes open-water use, particularly the upper and middle layers, and distinguishes survival in ponds from reproduction requiring suitable river habitat. Introduction to a waterbody therefore does not prove self-sustaining reproduction.
Diet
Phytoplankton, also zooplankton and detritus.
Behaviour
It often stays near the surface and filters its food.
An experiment in the Spoon River, United States, triggered jumping by playing engine sounds without moving the boat. This documented response to noise is not a rod-and-line fishing method.
In another Illinois River study published in 2017, jumping frequency was not related to speed or motor type among the tested conditions. Slowing down therefore does not guarantee an absence of jumping; no “safe” engine setting is inferred from this study.
Indicative biological size
40–70 cm in the Government of Québec account, which distinguishes this range from the 1.05 m maximum. A contextual descriptive range, not a mean measured in France or a legal size.
Fishing context and precautions
Collective Hungarian adaptation: a feeder and hooks in a suspension of particles, following Garai Roland. The account includes nobilis and a probable hybrid, without a trial specific to molitrix.
Prepare a suitable landing net and a wet surface before landing; keep your hands wet, minimise rubbing and support the fish horizontally close to the support. These general precautions do not remove the risk of jumping. No sound-driven herding is proposed.
In Hungary, section 28(17) generally prohibits releasing invasive fish, with an exception notably under section 28(15) for fish hooked externally outside the head. This exception does not permit deliberate hooking outside the mouth. Retained fish must be killed quickly and humanely before transport away from the bank, subject to the text’s exceptions; confirm the venue’s rules and applicable procedure with the manager.
A distinctive feature
Its gill structures filter very small particles; FAO also reports skin and mucus that are particularly sensitive to handling.
