Bogue: identification, habitat and fishing guide

Boops boops

When looking for bogue, do not restrict yourself to the bottom. Observe the shoal and test presentation height with a small bait. The float rig is an exploration suggestion; the sources consulted mainly support identification, diet and the use of worms as bait.

Distribution sources

Identification

Boops boops has a fairly elongated silvery body, large eyes and a small mouth. Its dorsal fin is long, the flanks have a few golden lines and the pectoral-fin base has a dark spot.

Salema have a deeper body and more yellow stripes. Horse mackerel have bony plates along the lateral line. Look at the entire profile when several silvery species move within the same shoal.

Habitat

Bogue move in midwater above varied bottoms. Movement towards the bottom or surface depends partly on time; their presence above seagrass does not make them fish that rest exclusively in the vegetation.

Diet

It mainly consumes plankton, as well as suspended plant particles and small invertebrates.

Behaviour

It feeds on suspended particles, plankton and small invertebrates. A small animal bait is therefore a reasonable avenue to try, but no comparison here demonstrates the best bait.

Indicative biological size

Around 25 cm on average as an adult according to DORIS; a descriptive indication.

Fishing context and precautions

  1. Set up a readable float suited to the bait’s volume and the conditions. Place adjustable shotting above the hooklength, with a single hook carrying a small portion of a permitted marine worm.
  2. Cast or place it along a clear route, slightly beside the observed shoal. Adjust the float’s depth setting to offer the bait at the fish’s level rather than always letting it touch the bottom.
  3. Follow the drift without continually pulling the float. A submergence or displacement must be distinguished from movement caused by wind; check the bait if bites stop.
  4. At a confirmed bite, set the hook gently and use the landing net. This float rig remains an indicative editorial suggestion: the commercial account consulted attests to worms, not a validated bogue-fishing protocol.

A distinctive feature

The name Boops evokes ox eyes in Greek, referring to its large eyes.
