Distribution sources

Identification

Large mouth extending past the eye, with blotched flanks.

Habitat

It inhabits notably calm waters, lakes, canals and slow rivers, with shelter provided by vegetation or submerged wood.

Suggested progression: test the outside of the cover first, then a gap through which you can bring the fish back. Accuracy and the ability to land the fish should come before a cast under an inaccessible branch.

Diet

Insects, crustaceans, amphibians and fish.

Behaviour

This predator eats fish, crustaceans and other available prey. It may respond to a presentation close to its shelter.

During breeding, a male guarding a nest may defend a small area. Spotting a visible fish does not justify provoking it: move away from the spot and respect local protections.

Indicative biological size

20–50 cm in the Vendée guide; a descriptive range.

Fishing context and precautions

Surface lures or streamers.

A distinctive feature

The male guards and fans the eggs, then watches over the fry while they initially remain grouped together.
